The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has broken it’s silence over the certificate racketeering scheme as reported by an undercover reporter, Audu Umar.
NYSC said the reporter manipulated the system by altering his email address and phone number during the application process, successfully evading initial detection.
The NYSC claimed that the reporter managed to breach the system and secure mobilization for the NYSC, despite having already completed his service in 2019.
NYSC spokesman Eddy Megwa said this, adding hat the system initially rejected Umar due to his prior service but accepted him after the changes, leading to his initial posting in Osun State.
Megwa emphasized the existence of checks and balances within the NYSC system, assuring that corrective measures are being implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
He highlighted the reliance on university-provided graduate lists rather than maintaining an independent database.
Addressing the issue of preventing future breaches, Megwa stated that it is not the NYSC’s responsibility to assess certificates.
Instead, the organization has resorted to assessing foreign students’ abilities through tests.
He shared startling discoveries made during this process, revealing instances where individuals struggled with basic English language proficiency.
Megwa recounted a noteworthy incident from 2006 when the then DG of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Yusuf Momoh, uncovered a case where a purported corps member could not provide the title of his final project.
This revelation led to an investigation, exposing the unauthorized inclusion of the individual’s name in the list of graduates from a specific university.
