Change leadership of oil, gas sector — Group urges Tinubu

A civil society group, Advocates of Justice in Africa, AJA, has called on President Bola Tinubu to extend the recent shake-ups in the Department of State Services, DSS and the National Intelligence Agency, NIA, to the oil and gas sector.

DAILY POST recalls that President Tinubu earlier in the week approved the appointments of Adeola Ajayi as the new DG of DSS and Mohammed Mohammed as the new DG of NIA.

There has been widespread jubilation over the exit of Yusuf Bichi.

Reacting to developments, the group, in a statement by its convener, Johnson Ali Usman, said the establishment of new leadership in DSS and NIA was a “step in the right direction.”

The group urged the president to take immediate action to address the alleged corruption in the oil and gas sector in Nigeria.

Usman urged Tinubu to remove and replace the leadership of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, to ensure that the sector is free of corruption.

According to the group: “The sector’s failure to effectively manage resources and address challenges has led to inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement.

“The oil and gas sector is plagued by fuel scarcity, pipeline vandalism, and oil theft, resulting in billions of dollars lost to fraudulent activities. Despite the sector’s potential to drive economic growth, it has been plagued by inefficiencies, corruption, and mismanagement.

“The lack of transparency and accountability in the sector has led to widespread corruption, with billions of dollars lost to fraudulent activities.”
