Newly appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Sekou Chelle, has disclosed that his decision to take on the role was driven by the allure of leading Nigeria’s senior national team, which he described as “the best in Africa.”
Speaking after his final match as head coach of Algerian club MC Oran, where his team secured a 1-0 victory over US Biskra, Chelle emphasized the magnitude of the opportunity.
“This was my last game in charge of MC Oran,” the former Mali coach told Algerian sports media. “I worked with enthusiasm and, of course, the pressure. I will miss the fans, so also the critics.”
Chelle, 47, whose appointment by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has sparked mixed reactions in the Nigerian sporting community, expressed excitement about the role.
“This is a huge opportunity I could not refuse. I grabbed it with both hands,” he stated.
The coach, who will earn a monthly salary of $50,000, is expected to arrive in Abuja Sunday with his three assistants, each to be paid $5,000 monthly by the NFF. He is set to be officially unveiled to the public on Monday.
Despite criticism surrounding his appointment, Chelle remains optimistic about his tenure, highlighting the potential of the Super Eagles under his leadership.
