The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, says no fewer than  53 persons have lost their lives to cholera outbreak across the country.

This development was disclosed in an update issued by the agency on Monday via its official X platform.

In response to the escalating health crisis, the NCDC announced the activation of its National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).

“Following a dynamic risk assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation, which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, we have activated the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC),” the NCDC stated.

As of June 24, 2024, the cholera outbreak has resulted in 1,528 suspected cases and 53 fatalities across 31 states.

The NCDC’s activation of the EOC is a critical measure aimed at enhancing coordination and response efforts to curb the spread of the disease and mitigate further loss of life.

Cholera, a severe diarrheal illness caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, poses significant health risks, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water.

The NCDC has reiterated the importance of public awareness and preventive measures to control the outbreak.

The NCDC says it has embarked on  the deployment of rapid response teams to affected states, provision of medical supplies, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive and effective response.

The agency added that it  is also working to strengthen surveillance and reporting systems to better track and manage the spread of cholera.
