No fewer than 25 lives have been lost to a recent outbreak of Gastroenteritis, also known as Cholera, in Sokoto State, with 15 others currently hospitalised.
The outbreak has affected three local government areas: Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Asabe Balarabe, confirmed the figures during a press briefing in Sokoto.
She disclosed that laboratory tests conducted on samples from the affected individuals confirmed the presence of active Cholera cases.
“Currently, we have 15 active cases under treatment in Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware. Sadly, we have recorded 25 deaths out of the 1,160 people affected by the outbreak,” she said.
Dr. Balarabe further highlighted the government’s efforts to curb the spread of the disease, noting that medical supplies and drugs have been distributed across 18 local government areas as part of the intervention measures.
“The state government’s response has been prompt and effective. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to manage the situation and prevent further spread of the disease,” she added.
Health officials and rescue teams are collaborating with stakeholders to monitor the situation, provide care for the infected, and educate residents on preventive measures.
The outbreak has raised concerns about water sanitation and hygiene practices in the affected areas. Residents are advised to boil drinking water, maintain proper hygiene, and report any suspected cases to health authorities promptly.
The Sokoto State government has urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them of its commitment to containing the outbreak and preventing future occurrences.
