Christmas: Kano Residents Shun Beef, Chickens For Fish Due To High Cost

The festive atmosphere in Kano took an unusual turn this Christmas as many residents abandoned traditional choices like beef, chicken, and goat meat, opting instead for fish due to skyrocketing prices.

A visit to the bustling Sabon Gari fish market on Christmas Day revealed an unprecedented surge in fish sales, with catfish and tilapia dominating the counters.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that residents, faced with limited budgets, turned to the more affordable alternative to maintain their celebrations.

Mrs. Vero Femi, a shopper at the market, shared her experience of adjusting her Christmas menu after being priced out of the meat market.

“I had planned to buy beef, but the cost was just too high. Even chicken and goat meat were beyond my budget. I had to settle for fish instead,” she lamented.

The trend also boosted local businesses, as some customers purchased fish not only for home consumption but also to prepare pepper soup for sale at popular cooling spots across the city.

For Umar Haruna, a 21-year-old fish trader, the unexpected surge in fish demand was both surprising and profitable.

“The festive season usually brings higher demand for beef and mutton, but this year, the patronage for fish has been extraordinary,” he said. Haruna, who has relied on his fish business to fund his education, welcomed the boost to his trade.
