A Nigerian Catholic priest, Fr. Celestine Eze, has condemned the Federal Government and health authorities following the alleged death of a pregnant woman at the National Hospital, Abuja, reportedly due to the ongoing doctors’ strike at the facility.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, has sparked renewed outrage over the prolonged industrial action that has grounded medical services at one of Nigeria’s foremost tertiary hospitals, leaving patients—particularly pregnant women—without access to critical care.
In a viral video shared on his Facebook page and seen by PLATFORM TIMES, Fr. Eze was visibly distraught as he narrated how the woman, who was referred to the National Hospital for urgent medical attention, allegedly died after arriving to find no doctors on duty.
Describing the situation as heartbreaking, the cleric lamented the state of the hospital, which he said was deserted despite being regarded as one of the best healthcare institutions in the country.
“This is the National Hospital, supposedly the best hospital in Nigeria, yet everywhere is deserted,” he said.
“Pregnant women cannot be attended to because doctors are on strike.”
He accused the government of indifference, saying lives were being lost due to systemic failure in the healthcare sector.
“Government does not care. People are dying. It hurts to be in Nigeria; it truly hurts,” he added.
Fr. Eze further alleged that several patients were present at the hospital but were left unattended, stressing that the deceased woman had been specifically referred to see a doctor.
“A particular woman was referred here to see a doctor, but she has died. Nobody attended to her. It is painful and heartbreaking that this is what we are witnessing in Nigeria,” he said.
Expressing deep frustration, the cleric warned that the collapse of the healthcare system would ultimately affect all Nigerians, regardless of social status.
“This is January 3, 2026, and everything is frustrating and unbearable. Why is Nigeria like this? It hurts deeply,” he said.
“God will not forgive politicians for this wickedness until they change. If you think your children are safe, don’t be deceived; this failure will touch everyone sooner or later.”
The incident has reignited calls for urgent government intervention to resolve the dispute with striking doctors and restore full medical services at public hospitals to prevent further loss of lives.
