These two words truly share some similarities but the fact remains that they are different, especially at the level of their usages. While abroad is an adverb, overseas can comfortably function as adverb and adjective.
Most people wrongly use them as nouns. For example, Things are not done like this in abroad The introduction of preposition in to the sentence is a grammatical blunder.Therefore, the sentence should read:
Things are not done like this abroad. In the same spirit, overseas cannot perform the function of a noun too. Although, they both can function as adverbs. e.g He studied Geography abroad.
She travelled overseas.Note that only overseas can function as adjective. As a result, it is possible to have a sentence like : He applied for one overseas scholarship scheme. You are welcome to my weekly English Language Classroom.
