There was panic on Wednesday morning at the Ebonyi State Police Command headquarters in Abakaliki as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ogbon-Inu Taiwo Popoola, slumped and died during a management meeting.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred at about 10:30am while a routine management meeting was ongoing at the office of the Commissioner of Police.
Popoola, who was the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Intelligence Department, was said to have suddenly developed breathing difficulties and began gasping for breath in the presence of other senior officers.
Sources within the command disclosed that the meeting was immediately disrupted as colleagues raised alarm and rushed to assist the senior officer.
He was promptly taken to the Police Medical Centre located within the command headquarters, where health personnel reportedly made frantic efforts to stabilise him.
However, despite urgent medical intervention, doctors later confirmed that Popoola had died.
Preliminary medical findings indicated that the senior officer suffered cardiac arrest, which was said to be secondary to hypertensive heart disease.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the mortuary of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
The sudden death threw the command into mourning, with officers describing the late ACP as dedicated, disciplined and professional in the discharge of his duties.
Confirming the incident, the Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, said the command lost a committed officer who died in active service.
Ukandu added that further directives concerning burial arrangements and official condolences would be communicated by the command in due course.
Popoola’s death adds to growing concerns over the health and welfare of officers working under intense pressure within the Nigeria Police Force.
