The controversial Commercial Motorcycle Riders Identification Scheme (COMORIS) has been declared illegal, as the Ogun State Police Command directs its officers not to detain any commercial motorcyclist nor allow the custody of bikes allegedly hijacked by the so-called COMORIS boys.
This directive follows rising public outcry and reports of widespread harassment and extortion by these touts, who have been terrorizing road users in Abeokuta, particularly around Baptist Primary School Junction, Ijaye.
Rights and Freedom Advocates (RIFA), a civil rights group, commended patriotic Nigerians—especially senior citizens in Ogun State—who reported the atrocities committed by the COMORIS boys.
RIFA’s intervention helped bring the matter to the attention of key security agencies, including the Ogun State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a statement, RIFA praised the Commissioner of Police, Dr. Olanrewaju Ogunlowo, for his firm stance on the illegality of COMORIS and for instructing police officers not to cooperate with the group in any form.
The group also singled out the dedication of the DPO of Ibara Police Station, SP Lateef Balogun, and other officers for their patriotism and professionalism in addressing the crisis.
RIFA further warned the Abeokuta South Local Government Chairman against involvement in illegal revenue collection through outsourcing to individuals like Nurudeen Olayinka Sanyaolu, also known as Betterlife, whose purported contract to collect levies via COMORIS boys remains unlawful.
The organization cited the Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Act Cap.T2 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, stressing that local governments do not have the power to outsource tax or levy collection or to mount roadblocks for revenue purposes.
The advocacy group called on the Nigeria Police Force to enforce the law by arresting and prosecuting anyone involved in illegal roadblocks or unauthorized levy collection, emphasizing that violators face fines and imprisonment.
RIFA also lauded Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for his imminent order to disband the miscreants tarnishing the state’s image, especially amid visits by dignitaries.
RIFA urged stakeholders and the Ogun State government to maintain peace and uphold legality, warning against any anarchy fueled by illegal revenue schemes at the local government level.
