Convicted Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans, Opts For Plea Bargain

Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, famously known as Evans, along with his co-defendant Joseph Emeka, charged with murder and attempted kidnapping, have opted for a plea bargain.

This decision was revealed by the state lead counsel, Mr. Yusuf Sule, during a court session on Thursday before Justice Adenike Cokers of an Ikeja High Court.

The case, which was called for re-arraignment, was expected to see Evans and his co-defendant face an amended five-count charge, including charges related to murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit felony (specifically, kidnapping), and attempt to murder.

However, Mr. Sule informed the court that the defendants had expressed their intention to pursue a plea bargain.

While acknowledging this development, he also mentioned that the plea bargain terms were currently under consideration by the Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN).

The decision to opt for a plea bargain marks a significant development in the legal proceedings against Evans and his co-defendant.

Plea bargaining allows defendants to negotiate with the prosecution to plead guilty to lesser charges or to cooperate in providing information or testimony in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Evans, once considered one of Nigeria’s most notorious kidnappers, has been a central figure in high-profile criminal cases.

His arrest and subsequent trial have garnered widespread attention, shedding light on the issue of kidnapping and organized crime in the country.
