The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, in Cross River State says it will ask the Federal Government to stop sending monthly allocations to the 18 LGAs in the state if Governor Bassey Otu fails to conduct council elections in December 2024.
IPAC issued the ultimatum on Friday at a press conference addressed by its chairman in the state, Engr. Effiom Edet.
IPAC called on the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission, CROSIEC, to publish the election timetable without delay.
The group also called on the Governor to expeditiously assent to the CROSIEC Bill recently passed by the State House of Assembly, which amended the law regulating the conduct of council elections.
“On the strength of the foregoing, and in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court on local government autonomy, IPAC demands that the governor conducts the long awaited local government elections before the
end of December, 2024.
“Failure to conduct the election promptly, the Council will not hesitate to ask the federal government to stop sending allocation to the 18 local government areas in the state.
“IPAC further charges CROSIEC to ensure the conduct of a free, fair, transparent, credible and peaceful local government elections in the state,” the IPAC chairman said.
