A couple miraculously escaped death on Wednesday after a 20-feet container-laden truck fell on their car at the Toyota bus stop along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
In a statement on Thursday, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, revealing that the truck, carrying two containers, lost control, causing one of the containers to fall on the rear of a Lexus Jeep with registration number EKY 251 HW.
Margaret Adeseye, the director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, disclosed that the accident occurred at approximately 6:35 pm and prompted an emergency response from the Isolo Fire Station.
“A male adult of about 45 years old and a female adult of about 37 years old were rescued from the jaws of death by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service,” the statement read.
“The victims were pulled out unhurt despite the extent of the wreckage.”
The truck, with registration number BDG 513 XW, was promptly cleared from the highway to ease the ensuing traffic. Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), supported by the Nigeria Police, ensured the road was reopened after the operation.
Adeseye noted that the victims, along with the truck driver, underwent trauma therapy to evaluate their physical and mental well-being.
Accidents involving container-laden trucks are becoming increasingly frequent in Lagos, a major commercial hub in Nigeria. In November, a similar incident occurred in the Mile 2 area of the state when a 40-feet container toppled onto a car.
Authorities continue to urge drivers of heavy-duty vehicles to adopt safer practices to prevent such accidents, which often lead to loss of life and property damage.
