The scheduled arraignment of the suspended governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, which was initially set for Thursday, has been adjourned to the 23rd of August.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the adjournment, originally planned for Thursday, was postponed due to the absence of some of the defendants named in the charges.

Emefiele, who was present in court, faces charges alongside Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN employee, and her company April1616 Investments Limited, on 20 counts related to procurement fraud, conspiracy, and conferring corrupt advantages.

On the 25th of July, Emefiele was arraigned on two counts for the “Illegal possession of firearms” at the federal high court in Ikoyi and was subsequently granted bail of 20 million Naira.

PLATFORM TIMES reported that the judge, Nicholas Oweibo, had ordered Emefiele to be held in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCos) pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.

However, the Department of State Services (DSS) insisted that he must return to their custody, leading to a face-off between the secret police and prison officials.

Following the face-off, the DSS re-arrested Emefiele on the court premises.

Nonetheless, PLATFORM TIMES reported that the secret police filed an application before the Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, seeking to further detain the suspended CBN governor.

The application was however withdrawn by the Service over jurisdictional concerns.

Similarly, the Federal government filed an application before the Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking leave to appeal against the order granting bail to Emefiele on August 3rd.

On the 15th of August, the Federal government made an oral application to withdraw the charge of illegal possession of firearms against Emefiele.
