The Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Tuesday adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close associates of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode is facing a four-count charge filed by the Ogun State Police Command, bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
At the resumption of hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that three of the prosecution’s four witnesses — officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Vehicle Inspection Office — were present and ready to testify.
However, Nigiwe requested an adjournment to enable the prosecution duplicate the case file and forward it to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
Defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, opposed the request, arguing that since witnesses were already in court, trial should commence immediately.
Ruling on the application, the presiding magistrate, Olufunilayo Somefun, granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to February 25, directing that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Attorney-General’s office.
Kayode had earlier been granted N5 million bail with two sureties but was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The case stems from a fatal accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Sagamu axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck.
While the boxer reportedly sustained minor injuries and was later discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, two of his close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his longtime friend and strength and conditioning coach — died in the crash.
The adjournment, the court noted, was to ensure proper legal guidance from the state’s chief law officer before the commencement of full trial proceedings.
