A Grade A Customary Court sitting in the Mapo area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has formally dissolved a 13-year-old marriage between a teacher, Mr. Durojaye Akingbade, and his estranged wife, Olabisi, on the grounds of stubbornness and prolonged denial of conjugal rights.
Delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, ruled that the marriage had broken down irretrievably, stressing that the court could not compel the petitioner to remain in a union he no longer wished to continue. In the interest of peace, she ordered both parties to go their separate ways.
The court also granted a restraining order barring Olabisi from harassing, threatening, or interfering in Akingbade’s private life following the dissolution.
Akingbade had told the court that his marital troubles began shortly after Olabisi moved in with him, claiming she became defiant and ceased to perform her wifely duties, including preparing meals and fulfilling marital intimacy.
“It has been one issue after another. For three years now, she has denied me sexual intercourse. Before then, I sometimes had to force myself on her. She even stopped cooking for the children, who now depend on food from relatives,” he lamented.
He added that Olabisi had refused to vacate the apartment despite the crisis, prompting him to disconnect the electricity supply to her section of the house.
However, in her defence, Olabisi, also a teacher, denied the allegations, describing her husband as a chronic liar and a serial womaniser.
“He listens to his friends who boast about their sexual exploits. Things got worse when he accused me of infecting him with a disease, prompting me to withdraw from any sexual activity,” she said.
Olabisi also alleged that Akingbade married three other women between 2020 and 2024 without her knowledge and maintained a suspiciously close relationship with his mother.
