A Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Mamman Nasir Ali, son of a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Ali, to 14 years imprisonment for his involvement in a N2.2 billion oil subsidy fraud.
Justice Mojisola Dada handed down the sentence on Tuesday, convicting Ali alongside a Sierra Leonean national, Christian Taylor, and their company, Nasaman Oil Services Limited, on an amended 57-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, and forgery.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) prosecuted the case, which dates back to 2012 when the trio were first arraigned on a 49-count charge.
The agency accused them of fraudulently obtaining N2.2 billion from the Federal Government under the petroleum subsidy scheme using forged documents.
According to EFCC counsel, Seiduh Atteh, the convicts presented falsified “Gasoline Analysis” reports for a shipment on MT Overseas Limar, purportedly issued by inspection firm Saybolt Concremat, in a bid to claim subsidy payments for fuel never delivered.
Delivering judgment, Justice Dada said the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, describing the defendants’ actions as “deliberate and calculated deceit” that undermined the integrity of the government’s subsidy regime.
In addition to the jail terms, the court ordered the forfeiture of all identified assets and bank accounts linked to the fraud.
The judge also issued bench warrants for the arrest of two other suspects—Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Olabisi Abdul Afeez—who are currently at large.
The conviction marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to prosecute high-profile subsidy fraud cases that have plagued the petroleum sector.
