Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, has sentenced Aisha Alkali Wakil, widely known as “Mama Boko Haram,” and two others to five years imprisonment each for a N6 million fraud.
The convicts, including Wakil, who is the Chief Executive Officer of the Complete Care and Aid Foundation, a non-governmental organization, were found guilty of cheating, conspiracy, and providing false information.
The court delivered its judgment on November 28, 2024, also sentencing Tahiru Saidu Daura, the Programme Manager, and Prince Lawal Shoyode, the Country Director of the NGO, alongside Wakil.
The case stemmed from allegations that the trio obtained a Toyota Camry 2012 model valued at N6 million from a petitioner, Alhaji Bukar Kachalla of Abks Ventures Limited, under the pretense of purchasing the vehicle.
However, they failed to buy the car or return it to the petitioner.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned the defendants on September 1, 2020, on amended charges.
Count two of the charges revealed that the convicts dishonestly induced Kachalla between October and November 2018 to deliver the vehicle, claiming it was for executing a contract.
This act contravened Section 320(a) of the Penal Code and is punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code, Cap 102, Laws of Borno State.
Despite pleading not guilty, the EFCC’s legal team, led by Mukhtar Ali Ahmed and Shamsudee Olayinka Saka, presented three witnesses and several documents, establishing their case.
