A Kano Upper Shari’a Court has sentenced a housewife, Harira Muhammad, to memorise 10 portions of the Holy Qur’an after she was found guilty of being married to two men at the same time — an offence under Islamic law.
Delivering the judgment on Tuesday at the Tudun Murtala area of Kano, the presiding judge, Khadi Munzali Tanko Soron-Dinki, ruled that Muhammad must attend a local Islamic school to learn and memorise the Quranic verses as a corrective spiritual measure.
Muhammad was arraigned before the court after one of the men, Sagiru Shuaibu, reported that he had married her six months ago but later discovered she was also in a marital relationship with another man, identified as Bello Abdullahi, popularly known as ‘Yankaba’.
In his ruling, Khadi Soron-Dinki also ordered Muhammad to return the sum of N100,000 paid to her as dowry by Abdullahi, who reportedly entered the marriage unaware of her existing union.
However, Abdullahi told the court that he was not interested in reclaiming the money and permitted her to keep it.
Cases of polyandry — where a woman marries more than one man — are rare and considered a grave offence under Islamic jurisprudence.
The court’s decision to impose a religious corrective punishment instead of a custodial sentence underscores an approach aimed at reformation rather than retribution.
The ruling has generated public interest, with many praising the court’s blend of justice and spiritual guidance.
