A Family Court sitting in Iyaganku, Oyo State has issued a directive to detain a 14-year-old boy ( name withheld), who is accused of sexually assaulting a 22-month-old infant, in the Agodi Corrections facility.
The police have charged the boy, who is a minor, with the offense of defilement.
The Chief Magistrate, P. O. Adetuyibi, declined to hear the minor’s plea due to jurisdictional limitations.
Adetuyibi ordered the police to refer the case to the Oyo State Directorate of Public Prosecution for legal guidance.
The hearing was adjourned until July 20 for a mention.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Insp Oluwakemi Arowosaye, informed the court that the boy lives with his parents at No 4, Salawu Street, Ibadan.
“The boy sexually assaulted the baby between March 31 and April 3.” She said
She explained that the baby was left in the care of her sister and that she was an orphan.
Arowosaye pointed out that the offense violated Section 34 of the Child’s Right Law of 2006.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the baby has been taken by the Oyo State Child Welfare Department of the Ministry for Women Affairs.
