A staff member of Ecobank Nigeria, Solomon Stephen Ufayo, has been remanded in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for allegedly engaging in cybercrime involving the fraudulent transfer of over N2.4 million.
The banker was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Lagos Zonal Command, before Justice Yellim Bogoro of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on a one-count charge bordering on cybercrime.
According to the charge, Ufayo, who worked as a Relief Teller at Ecobank, was accused of impersonating a customer, Ogunfodunrin Omowunmi Ajoke, between March 10 and March 28, 2025.
He allegedly posted fictitious deposit and withdrawal entries on her Ecobank account (No. 2801086259), without her consent, and diverted the sum of N2,404,000 into his personal Opay account.
The charge reads in part: “That you, Solomon Stephen Ufayo… fraudulently represented yourself as Ogunfodunrin Omowunmi Ajoke, by posting false deposit and withdrawal tellers… with intent to gain advantage for yourself.”
Ufayo pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to him.
Following the guilty plea, the prosecution counsel, Abdulhamid L. Tukur, presented David Ngale Gajere, an EFCC operative, to review the facts of the case.
Gajere narrated how the fraudulent transactions were carried out and confirmed that the defendant had issued a bank draft of N2,404,000 as restitution to the affected customer.
The court admitted the defendant’s extra-judicial statement, the fraudulent bank slips, and the certified true copy of the restitution draft as evidence.
Justice Bogoro adjourned the matter till June 6, 2025, for judgment and ordered that Ufayo be remanded in Ikoyi Prison pending sentencing.
