A Magistrate Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has remanded a 35-year-old man, Susaine Morgan, in custody over an alleged attempt to assassinate the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri.
The alleged incident occurred on January 1, 2025, at the minister’s residence in Ekeremor town, Ekeremor Local Government Area of the state.
Morgan was arrested following a security alert that identified armed individuals among the crowd visiting the minister during the Yuletide season.
During the arraignment, the Police Prosecutor, ASP Stella Jerry-Friday, informed the court that Morgan was arrested in possession of two AK-47 rifles.
He is charged with conspiracy, armed robbery, attempted kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms. The case, referenced as YMC/51C/2025, also implicates six other suspects who are currently at large.
The court approved Morgan’s remand at the Okaka Correctional Service Centre for 30 days to allow further investigations and to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
A security source disclosed that the assailants blended with the visitors to gain access to the minister’s residence.
However, security personnel foiled the plan after receiving intelligence about their presence. During a search, Morgan was found carrying firearms in a bag, leading to his immediate arrest, while the others escaped by mingling with the crowd.
The fleeing suspects reportedly caused chaos in the community, attacking a filling station, stealing ₦400,000, and commandeering a speedboat to aid their escape.
Police sources confirmed that Morgan has made “useful statements” identifying the other suspects involved in the plot. Security operatives are intensifying efforts to track and apprehend the remaining fugitives.
