The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded in a correctional centre in Ilaro, Ogun State, following his arraignment before the Ifo Magistrate Court.
The monarch, accused of assault and other related offences, was denied immediate release after failing to meet the bail conditions set by the court.
Oba Ogunjobi appeared in court on Tuesday, accompanied by legal counsel, to face a three-count charge brought against him by the Nigeria Police Force.
The charges include conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of public peace.
These charges stem from a widely circulated video that purportedly shows the monarch verbally and physically assaulting Mr. Areola Abraham, an elderly chief in his community.
In the disturbing video, which went viral on social media platforms, Ogunjobi is seen berating Mr. Abraham, accusing him of conspiracy and threatening him with dire consequences.
The monarch, identified as a retired police officer, is heard boasting of his influence within law enforcement circles, adding to the gravity of the public outcry against his actions. During the court proceedings, Oba Ogunjobi pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him.
Despite his plea, the presiding magistrate set bail at a substantial sum of N5 million, coupled with stringent conditions requiring two sureties who must also each deposit N5 million.
However, as of the time of reporting, the monarch was unable to fulfill these bail conditions, resulting in his remand at the correctional facility in Ilaro.
The case has been adjourned to March 6 for further hearing, allowing both the prosecution and the defence ample time to prepare their respective cases.
Meanwhile, reactions continue to pour in from members of the community and beyond, condemning the alleged actions of the suspended monarch and calling for justice to be served swiftly and fairly.
This incident has sparked widespread discussions about the conduct of traditional rulers and the repercussions of abuse of power, particularly in rural communities where they wield significant influence over local affairs.
