A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men to death by hanging for the brutal killing of a newlywed groom, Yazid Haruna, during a midnight robbery in Kano.
The trial judge, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu of the Kano State High Court, convicted Aliyu Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya on three counts bordering on conspiracy, armed robbery and culpable homicide.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Adamu-Aliyu held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and described the actions of the convicts as “inhuman and reprehensible.”
The court heard that the incident occurred in the early hours of June 11, 2025, at Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters in Kano, barely days after the victim’s wedding.
The prosecuting counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that at about 2:47 a.m., the convicts, armed with long knives and machetes, stormed Haruna’s residence with the intent to rob him.
He said the attackers dispossessed the victim of two mobile phones and N19,500 cash before repeatedly stabbing him in the stomach, chest and head.
“The defendants invaded the residence of Haruna and stabbed him until he bled to death after robbing him,” the prosecutor told the court.
According to Abba-Sorondinki, the offences contravened Sections 97(1), 298(c) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered medical reports, which were admitted as exhibits, to establish that the victim died from multiple stab wounds inflicted during the attack.
Although the defendants denied committing the crime, their counsel, Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, urged the court to temper justice with mercy.
In her ruling, Justice Adamu-Aliyu rejected the plea for leniency, stressing that the evidence before the court was overwhelming.
She subsequently sentenced the convicts to one year imprisonment each for conspiracy and life imprisonment for armed robbery.
For culpable homicide, the court imposed the maximum penalty of death by hanging.
The judge further lamented the rising wave of violent robberies in residential areas, warning that the judiciary would not hesitate to impose stiff penalties on offenders to serve as a deterrent.
