A High Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has restrained Governor Dapo Abiodun, his agents and two private firms from further trespassing on over 15,000 acres of land belonging to Ilara Remo community in Remo North Local Government Area of the state.
Justice O.S. Oloyede, who presided over the matter, on Monday granted an interim injunction stopping the defendants—Governor Abiodun, Industrial Platform Remo Limited, and Arise Integrated Industrial Platform—from erecting structures or alienating the disputed land pending the determination of the substantive suit.
The order followed an ex parte motion and affidavit of urgency filed by community leaders including the Lisa of Ilara Remo, Chief Samuel Olukoya Sodunola; Oliwo Egudu, Chief Babatunde Ogunfeso; the Olootu Asipa Oje, Chief Ayedun Akintoye; Mrs. Remilekun Ogunfuwa, spokesperson of Ilara Remo Development Association; and 19 others.
The claimants, through their counsel, Dr. Olumide Ayeni (SAN), told the court that the land measuring 6,227 hectares (about 15,309 acres) was their ancestral property duly captured in Survey Plan No. IL02/PROV/1998, prepared in June 1998.
Ayeni alleged that the 4th and 5th defendants—Industrial Platform Remo Limited and Arise Integrated Industrial Platform—were “stealing a march” on the community by erecting structures and secretly transferring portions of the land to third parties despite pending litigation.
He argued that the firms were acting with the backing of the state government and Governor Abiodun, insisting that their continuous activities would cause irreparable damage and render any judgment in favour of the community meaningless.
“Damages would not be adequate to compensate the applicants if the defendants are allowed to continue trespassing and erecting structures.
The balance of justice requires the protection of the applicants’ rights pending determination of this suit,” Ayeni submitted.
Ruling on the application, Justice Oloyede held that the court found merit in the claimants’ plea and therefore restrained the defendants, their agents, servants, and privies from “further dealing, trespassing or alienating” the community’s land.
The judge adjourned further hearing on the matter to Monday, September 1, 2025.
