Crescent University Abeokuta has inspired students of secondary schools on the importance of learning Physics, stressing that the subject is one of the most important branch of science.
This was the take-away from the Third Physics Day organized by College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CONAS) of the university.
Discussing the topic “Simulations in Physics”, Prof. Amidu Mustapha, a professor of Radiation and Health Physics, described simulations as models which are used to communicate abstract things in a concrete form, stressing that Physics is useful in Engineering, Mathematics, Technology, Biotechnology and other areas.
He said models like physical models, mathematical models, analytical models, molecular models and the rest can be used to simplify complex situations and solve human problems.
The second speaker, Mrs Blessing Seun Chukwuma, underscored the importance of “Physics Education Technology SIMS As a Tool for Understanding Physical Concepts”.
Chukwuma stressed the need to teach and learn technology to which Physics has contributed, adding that the foundation of every society is STEM, meaning Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
She admonished students that “no one is a failure until you accept the failure,” citing Thomas Edison who failed several times before succeeding with his invention.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila who was the Grand Host, described science as “the best way of analyzing the society’s problems,” adding that science is the future.
The brainchild of the programme, Scholar Akanji Olaniyi hinted that he conceived the idea of Physics Day few years ago as a platform to develop and produce thinkers in physical sciences to positively impact the immediate society.
Olaniyi expressed appreciation to the university management and Dean of CONAS,Dr (Mrs) Jadesola Sanusi for their moral, intellectual and financial support.
Students from invited schools also demonstrated their talents during quiz competition, exhibitions and presentation of scientific models.
Olaogun Asegun of D LIGHT COLLEGE (soyoye Abeokuta) clinched the first position (male) in quiz competition while Ni’motallah Tiamiyu of Al-Ameen College also got the first prize for female. The runners up are Ridwan Salawu of IMA International College and Toluwani Alao of Taidob College, Asero respectively.
Three personalities were given meritorious awards, namely : Prof Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, Prof. Joseph Coker who is the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Physics and Ambassador Saliu Akewugberu who is Vice Chairman of the Association of Model Schools, Ogun State.
