Crescent University, Abeokuta, marked its 16th convocation with remarkable achievements, graduating 479 students, including 49 first-class honorees.
The event, which highlighted the institution’s academic excellence, also saw the conferment of honorary degrees on three distinguished individuals for their outstanding contributions to society.
The convocation’s highlight was the academic breakdown of the graduating class: 49 first-class graduates, 197 second-class upper division, 173 second-class lower division, 54 third-class graduates, and six who earned pass grades.
The ceremony also witnessed the graduation of 47 Master’s degree students.
The ceremony honoured Daniel Oyeniyi, the best graduating student, who achieved a 4.95 CGPA, the highest ever in the university’s Mass Communication department.
In his address, the university’s proprietor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prince Muhammed Adesegun Ajibola, SAN, reiterated the need to amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Act to extend its support to private tertiary institutions.
He made this appeal during the convocation, stressing the increasing financial burdens borne by private universities, especially in maintaining infrastructure and ensuring consistent electricity supply.
Ajibola emphasized that private universities, like Crescent University, play a critical role in expanding access to quality education for many qualified candidates.
“Private universities play important complementary roles in making tertiary education accessible to qualified candidates,” Ajibola noted.
He urged the government to allow TETFund to support private institutions in the same way it assists public universities.
He further recalled a similar plea made in 2011 by then Vice President Arc.
Mohammed Namadi Sambo, represented by Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, advocating for an amendment to the TETFund Act.
The convocation also celebrated three eminent individuals: Prince Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon, Aare Onikoyi of Yorubaland Tomori Williams, and Mr. Kabir Gbemisola, who were conferred with honorary Doctor of Science in Business Administration degrees for their contributions to business and societal development.
Ajibola used the occasion to dismiss rumors about the withdrawal of accreditation for Crescent University’s law programme, affirming that the institution holds full accreditation for all its academic programmes, including the Bola Ajibola College of Law.
He also acknowledged the university’s expanding admission quota from the Council for Legal Education.
In a gesture of appreciation, Ajibola thanked Prince Yemisi Shyllon for his generous donations, which included an e-library and law books for the College of Law, greatly enriching research and learning resources.
Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, praised Crescent University for maintaining 100% accreditation of its academic programs, as confirmed by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
He urged graduates to be ambassadors of the institution, contributing to its growth and future success.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, reiterated the university’s dedication to academic excellence, highlighting the exemplary performances of its nursing and law students in national and international competitions.
Gbajabiamila also reaffirmed the institution’s strict policies on student discipline, emphasizing zero tolerance for examination malpractice, drug abuse, and indecent dressing.
Daniel Oyeniyi, who benefitted from the proprietor’s scholarship for over a decade, encouraged his fellow graduates to embrace entrepreneurship and self-development, particularly in emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence.
In recognition of his outstanding academic performance, Ajibola pledged to sponsor Oyeniyi’s education up to the PhD level and offered him automatic employment at Crescent University’s Mass Communication department.
