Mujeebat Idris, an undergraduate from the Bola Ajibola College of Law (BACOLAW) at Crescent University, Abeokuta, has emerged as the winner of the 2024 Parliamentary System of Government Support Group (PSSG) National Essay Competition.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the prestigious win has solidified her reputation as one of Nigeria’s budding legal intellectuals.
Idris, who is also an Ibeji Foundation scholar, outperformed Henry Chukwura from the University of Calabar and Nabila Sule from the University of Ilorin, who took second and third places respectively.
Her essay, titled “From Presidentialism to Parliamentarism: Examining Nigeria’s Quest for Better Governance,” captivated the audience during its live presentation at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja.
The essay competition, held in conjunction with the House of Representatives, was part of the PSSG’s national dialogue aimed at promoting a homegrown parliamentary system of governance in Nigeria.
Notable facilitators included Hon. Rep. Kingsley Chinda, Hon. Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, and Hon. Rep. Wale Raji, who sought to spark informed discussion on Nigeria’s governance structure.
In a congratulatory phone call, the Vice-Chancellor of Crescent University, Prof. Ibraheem Gbajabiamila, described Mujeebat’s achievement as “magnificent.”
Expressing pride in her accomplishment, he said, “Congratulations to you and all of us. More blessings, onwards and upwards.”
Prof. Momodu Kassim-Momodu, Dean of the Bola Ajibola College of Law, also extended his admiration in a text message, writing, “Congratulations to you, Mujeebat. We are proud of you. The best is yet to come.”
Mujeebat’s victory is one in a series of academic accolades, having previously won the Bronze medal in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2021 and the Brainbox award at the Bola Ajibola College of Law in 2023.
