Suspected cultists on Thursday night turned a burial ceremony in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, into a bloodbath, killing four mourners and leaving at least 15 others injured.
The hoodlums, who stormed the venue at the late hours of the day, reportedly opened fire on guests, throwing the community into chaos as mourners scampered for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command said its operatives swiftly moved in to restore order and prevent further bloodshed.
In a post on its official X handle on Friday, the command stated:
“In the late hours on 11th September 2025, Anambra Police swiftly restored calm in Ogidi after suspected cultists attacked a burial ceremony, leaving 4 dead and 15 injured.”
The police assured residents that investigations had commenced and vowed to track down and arrest all those behind the attack.
The tragic incident has again highlighted the recurring menace of cult-related violence in Anambra, a state where communities have repeatedly suffered deadly clashes linked to rival groups.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who has previously pledged to clamp down on cultism and criminality, was yet to issue a formal statement as of press time.
However, residents of Ogidi called on the government to intensify security patrols and ensure justice for the victims.
The bodies of those killed have reportedly been deposited at a nearby morgue, while the injured are receiving treatment at undisclosed hospitals.
