A senior customs officer assigned to the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘B’ Kaduna, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has been apprehended and is now set to face trial for extortion.
The officer, whose identity is being withheld, stands accused of extorting N500,000 from a car buyer identified as Muhammad Ahmad.
The arrest was carried out on Monday, February 26, 2024, as the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘B’ Kaduna, Mr. Dalha Wada-Chedi, handed over the suspected officer to the Customs Police Unit in Kaduna.
The alleged incident took place along the Mokwa-Jebba Road in Niger.
Addressing the media at the unit’s premises, Comptroller Wada-Chedi confirmed that the accused officer was a member of the Mokwa Patrol Team and assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter.
The complainant, Muhammad Ahmad, has also been invited to aid in the ongoing inquiry.
“The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, and his management team frowned upon such unruly behavior,” stated Wada-Chedi, emphasizing the commitment to diligent disciplinary procedures.
The suspected officer has been handed over to the Assistant Provost Marshal (APM) of the Customs Police Unit for further investigation.
Wada-Chedi clarified, “The findings of the investigation will be transmitted to NCS-HQ for further action by the Nigeria Customs Service Board, the only body responsible for the Appointment, Promotions, and Discipline of all Senior Officers.”
He reassured the public that updates on the investigation’s progress would be regularly provided, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring justice, fair hearing, and transparency.
The comptroller pledged to conclude the investigation promptly, stating, “This unprofessional and ungodly act will not be condoned, and the outcome shall be made public to serve as a deterrent to others.”
