The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced plans to auction 15,325 litres of seized premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, at N400 per litre.
The initiative is aimed at alleviating transportation challenges during the festive season.
Hussein Ejibunu, the national coordinator of the service’s Operation Whirlwind, disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing held at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos State.
He revealed that the seized product, valued at N27.5 million, was confiscated during operations in Lagos and Ogun states.
According to Ejibunu, the comptroller-general of customs, Adewale Adeniyi, directed that the petrol be sold to the public at the rate of N10,000 for 25 litres, equivalent to N400 per litre.
He added that all necessary legal procedures, including obtaining a court condemnation order, had been completed to facilitate the auction.
“This operation, which commenced on May 27, 2024, has recorded significant successes.
“The comptroller-general has encouraged our operatives to sustain the momentum until the activities of these economic saboteurs are completely eradicated,” Ejibunu stated.
He further explained that the auction of the seized petrol is part of the service’s strategy to mitigate the impact of transportation difficulties typically experienced during festive periods.
The customs official reiterated the agency’s commitment to curbing smuggling and other economic crimes, assuring the public that similar measures would be employed to address other pressing issues in the country.
