In a bid to bolster socio-economic empowerment and promote sustainable development in Nigeria, Dangote Cement Plc has trained and graduated 46 solar energy installers and entrepreneurs.
The graduation ceremony, held at the Dangote Academy in Obajana, Kogi State, marked another milestone in the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Plant Director of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana, Azad Nawabuddin, highlighted the program’s potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
Addressing the graduates, Nawabuddin, represented by the Head of the Production Department, Engr. John Gwong, described the initiative as a “meal ticket” and a rare opportunity for participants to establish themselves in the renewable energy industry.
He also lauded Aliko Dangote, the Group President, for his commitment to youth empowerment and job creation, aligning with the government’s agenda to alleviate unemployment.
“The training will not only support the provision of electricity in communities but will also contribute significantly to the renewable energy sector of Nigeria’s economy,” Nawabuddin stated.
The Head of Social Performance at Dangote Cement Plc, Mr. Wakeel Olayiwola, represented by Mr. Olusegun Olojede, emphasized that the initiative aligns with efforts to provide sustainable power solutions to millions of Nigerians.
Similarly, Mr. Ademola Adeyemi, General Manager of Community Affairs and Special Duties, described the empowerment scheme as a way of giving back to society.
He noted that the 46 beneficiaries, comprising 27 men and 19 women, hail from communities in Kogi State, including Obajana, Oyo, Iwaa, and Apata.
The training was conducted in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), which provided certification for the participants.
Engr. Abdulrahman Shehu Wudilawa, ITF’s Training Manager in Kogi State, applauded the graduates for their achievement, urging them to capitalize on Nigeria’s abundant solar energy potential.
“Solar technology is one of the most lucrative sectors of the Nigerian economy, and sunlight, the primary raw material, is in abundance,” he remarked.
Wudilawa further emphasized the environmental benefits of solar energy, noting that it generates power without greenhouse gas emissions, thereby reducing the nation’s carbon footprint and combating climate change.
