In a groundbreaking move that aligns with global best practices, the pan-African powerhouse, Dangote Group, is spearheading efforts to combat Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions across all its subsidiaries.
In a bid to contribute significantly to the fight against GHG, the conglomerate has adopted cutting-edge technologies and a multifaceted approach to raise awareness among its employees and host communities about the dire consequences of climate change and the importance of environmental sustainability.
Dangote Group’s Group Chief Branding and Communication Officer, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, emphasized their commitment, stating, “Our new plants are ingeniously designed to be resource-efficient and energy-conscious, reducing gaseous emissions from our production processes.”
Moreover, the company has made substantial investments in state-of-the-art equipment, including analyzers, opacimeters, and continuous emissions monitoring systems, enabling them to measure greenhouse gas emissions in real-time.
Mr. Chiejina underlined that Dangote’s environmental stewardship extends beyond emission reduction, with a focus on protecting and revitalizing the environment through initiatives like land reclamation and extensive tree planting efforts.
Notably, the company recently organized a workshop aimed at enlightening journalists in the North-Central and South-West geo-political zones, reinforcing the vital role of responsible climate change and environmental reporting in our changing world.
In a resolute commitment to environmental responsibility, DCP Obajana J.V Gungune’s Plant Director revealed that the company has harnessed cutting-edge technology and facilities to address the pressing issue of climate change.
“We must recognize that we need the environment more than it needs us. Hence, the imperative to safeguard and nurture it,” he emphasized during a press briefing.
Dr. Igazeuma Okoroba, Head of Suitability at Dangote Cement Plc, echoed this sentiment while speaking at the Obajana facility, highlighting the company’s profound dedication to environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation across all its operations.
The Head of Sustainability at Dangote Cement Plc’s Obajana Plant, Dr. Eseosa Ighile, detailed the innovative strategies implemented to curb Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
“In alignment with our commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 12, we have embraced alternative fuels (AF) to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” Dr. Ighile stated confidently.
She further elaborated on the ambitious AF project, aiming to achieve a thermal substitution rate of 25% in all plants by 2025, with plans to install AF feeding systems in all operational lines by 2024.
Highlighting the diversity of resources utilized for fuels, Dr. Ighile explained, “Our current fuel sources at DCP Obajana include tyre chips, waste oils, and agricultural waste like palm kernel shells and rice husks.
“We are also actively exploring the feasibility of refuse-derived fuels (RDF) as a future fuel source. Notably, between January and July 2023, we’ve incorporated over 34,800 metric tonnes of alternative fuel materials into our operations.”
The company’s comprehensive climate action agenda encompasses the vigilant monitoring of water quality, waste management, and GHG emissions. Moreover, Dangote Cement Plc has established a decarbonisation working group and diligently adheres to the guidelines set forth by both local and international environmental organizations.

Adedeji Adewale, the Head of Technical Training at Dangote Academy, has unveiled groundbreaking initiatives employed by Dangote Cement Plc to combat climate change.
The company’s commitment to environmental responsibility is exemplified through their utilization of electrostatic precipitators to capture dust and reintegrate it into their system, effectively reducing waste.
Furthermore, Dangote Academy has undertaken an ambitious tree planting program, with thousands of trees being added annually to their green efforts.
Recent endeavors have seen the planting of economically valuable trees, including Mangoes, Soursop, Dates, and orange trees, among others.
Mr. Adewale underscored the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, emphasizing its potential to shield the climate, rejuvenate the environment, and enhance the well-being of local communities.
