Dangote Group has announced a strategic series of international partnerships aimed at expanding its fertiliser operations in Nigeria and establishing new plants in Ethiopia, in a move set to bolster food security and strengthen Africa’s position in the global fertiliser market.
The group plans to raise Nigeria’s urea production capacity from the current three million metric tons to nine million metric tons annually. This expansion will involve the installation of four additional production trains, complementing the two existing trains at its facility.
In Ethiopia, Dangote Group recently held the groundbreaking ceremony for a $2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, which is expected to produce three million metric tons of urea per year, further advancing the company’s continental growth strategy.
To deliver state-of-the-art facilities and ensure operational excellence, Dangote Group has partnered with globally recognised firms for technology and project management.
Topsoe will provide ammonia technology licensing and complete process design packages for six ammonia plants—four in Nigeria and two in Ethiopia.
Saipem will oversee technology licensing and process design for urea melt units across all six plants.
Thyssenkrupp (UFT division) will supply granulation technology licenses and design packages, ensuring premium-quality urea granules for domestic and export markets.
Engineers India Limited (EIL) has been appointed project management consultant and engineering, procurement, and construction management consultant for the four fertiliser plants in Lekki, Nigeria.
The expansion is expected to create thousands of jobs, support agricultural value chains, and drive sustainable economic growth across Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the continent.
A Dangote Group statement noted that these partnerships reflect the company’s commitment to high-quality industrial development, global collaboration, and long-term contributions to Africa’s industrialisation and food security.
“With these projects, Dangote Group continues to demonstrate leadership in industrial capacity building, supporting national development priorities while advancing Africa’s presence in global fertiliser markets,” the statement added.
