In a significant stride towards its operational debut, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos has welcomed its fifth one-million-barrel cargo of Bonny Light crude oil.
The supply, orchestrated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), marks a pivotal moment for the 650,000 barrels per day refinery, anticipating the imminent arrival of the sixth cargo within the next few days.
Dangote Group, in a statement issued yesterday, highlighted the refinery’s commitment to kickstarting oil refining operations.
The ongoing deliveries of crude oil are a vital component of the refinery’s plan to contribute to Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in petroleum products and reduce the reliance on imports.
The latest cargo, received at the Single Point Mooring (SPM)-C2 Dangote Offshore Oil Terminal, has already been successfully discharged into the refinery’s crude oil tanks.
The Lagos Free Trade Zone-housed facility had previously received four million barrels of crude, setting the stage for its upcoming operational phase.
Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, Mr. Akin Omole, affirmed the refinery’s preparedness, indicating that the six million barrels target is on track for completion, positioning the refinery to commence its production.
Once delivered, these crude supplies will facilitate the initial operations, enabling the production of diesel, aviation fuel, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) before extending to petrol production.
The refinery, designed for 100% Nigerian crude with the flexibility to process other grades, boasts a daily processing capacity of 650,000 barrels.
Notably, it can handle various African and Middle Eastern crude grades, including US Light tight oil. Dangote Refinery aims to meet 100% of Nigeria’s refined product needs and has a surplus for export.
The refinery’s infrastructure includes two Single Point Mooring systems, truck-loading gantries capable of handling 2,900 trucks daily, and compliance with global environmental standards.
A self-sufficient marine facility equips it to handle vessels of the largest size. All products will conform to Euro V specifications.
As the refinery nears its operational threshold, stakeholders anticipate a substantial impact on Nigeria’s fuel supply challenges and positive contributions to West African countries.
The completion of this ambitious project stands as a testament to the Dangote Group’s ability to undertake and deliver large-scale capital projects, as expressed by Mr. Aliko Dangote, the President of Dangote Group.
The upcoming months are poised to witness the refinery ramping up to full capacity, marking a transformative milestone in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
