In a significant stride toward operationalizing the world’s largest single-train refinery, the Dangote Refinery has received a second shipment of one million barrels of bonny light crude from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
This delivery follows closely on the heels of the first one million barrels of Agbami crude received a week ago, marking the second phase of the anticipated six million barrels for the refinery.
The latest consignment, sourced from the Shell terminal via the MT Otis owned by Trafigura, underscores the strategic collaboration between industry players in Nigeria’s oil sector.
Mr. Akin Omole, the Managing Director of Dangote Ports Operations, revealed that the refinery is poised to receive more crude before the year-end, positioning itself for imminent operations.
Upon the completion of the six million barrel deliveries, the refinery is set to initiate production runs, commencing with diesel, aviation fuel, and LPG, and eventually progressing to the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
This development is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing fuel supply challenges faced not only by Nigeria but also by West African countries.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, designed to process 650,000 barrels per day of 100% Nigerian crude, boasts flexibility to handle various African and international crude grades.
Its capacity extends to meeting the entirety of Nigeria’s refined product requirements, including gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation jet, with surplus for export.
The refinery, situated at the Dangote Quay in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, features advanced infrastructure, including two Single Point Mooring systems (SPMs) for crude intake and three SPMs for product discharge.
Additionally, the facility can load an impressive 2,900 trucks a day at its truck loading gantries.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, expressed delight at the progress, highlighting its significance for the country. He emphasized the focus on ramping up the refinery to full capacity in the coming months.
The refinery aligns with international standards, conforming to Euro V specifications and adhering to emission norms set by the US EPA, European authorities, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), and African Refiners and Distribution Association (ARDA).
Osagie Okunbor, Country Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria, welcomed the startup of the refinery, emphasizing its pivotal role in producing fuels for Nigeria and West Africa.
