Dangote Cement Plc says it has invested over $280 million in compressed natural gas (CNG) technology and infrastructure, becoming the largest operator of CNG-powered trucks in Nigeria.
The company said it was in a bold move to support President Bola Tinubu’s drive for cleaner and more affordable energy.
The investment aligns with Tinubu’s commitment to expanding Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure to bolster economic growth and reduce transportation costs.
The President’s CNG initiative, aimed at harnessing Nigeria’s extensive natural gas resources, includes the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles, impacting sectors that transport people, food, and goods.
Emphasizing the urgency of this transition, Tinubu highlighted CNG as the future of Nigeria’s transport sector, citing economic and environmental benefits.
“Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go,” he stated.
Dangote Cement’s latest venture includes an acquisition of 3,100 CNG-powered trucks, with 1,500 already delivered and another 1,600 expected by the year’s end.
The company plans to transition its entire fleet to CNG by mid-2026, as part of a larger strategy to reduce carbon emissions and mitigate climate change.
Dangote Cement’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, outlined the company’s ambitious goals, noting, “By mid-2026, Dangote Cement aims to operate a fleet predominantly powered by CNG.”
To support this shift, the company is also investing heavily in CNG fueling infrastructure.
With a fueling station at its Obajana plant, capable of servicing over 3,000 trucks, and another station underway in Ibese, the company is well-positioned to meet its CNG needs.
Pathak confirmed that Dangote Cement’s investment will not only facilitate its operations but also positively impact Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, emphasized the alignment of the company’s investments with Nigeria’s commitment under the Paris Agreement to reach net-zero emissions by 2060.
Dangote praised Tinubu’s energy initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the President’s leadership as essential for fostering energy independence and environmental sustainability in Nigeria.
“We are committed to a cleaner and greener future, using CNG vehicles as a testament to our dedication,” Dangote remarked.
As Nigeria’s largest operator of CNG trucks, Dangote Cement’s investment underscores the potential of public-private partnerships in achieving national energy goals.
The company’s support not only bolsters Tinubu’s clean energy vision but also enhances the nation’s energy security, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
