President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lauded former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a close ally, accomplished professional and key contributor to Nigeria’s political and developmental progress.
Tinubu, in a statement on Monday, said Daniel’s contributions to politics, business and governance were products of hard work, resilience and determination, noting that his achievements cut across multiple sectors of national life.
The President also revisited their long-standing political relationship, revealing that Daniel played a crucial role in his emergence as Lagos State governor in 1999.
“As a mark of the close relationship Otunba and I have built, in the build-up to my election and inauguration as governor of Lagos State in 1999, OGD worked closely with me and others to ensure my election victory,” Tinubu stated.
He further described Daniel as a distinguished engineer and entrepreneur, highlighting his role as founder of Kresta Laurel, an electromechanical engineering company established in 1990, which has executed several projects across Nigeria.
Tinubu commended Daniel’s performance as Ogun State governor between 2003 and 2011, noting that his administration delivered significant strides in infrastructure, education and industrialisation.
According to him, one of Daniel’s enduring legacies was the initiation of the Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport project, alongside the establishment of the Tai Solarin University of Education, both of which continue to impact the state’s development.
He described the former governor as a “progressive politician” and a committed member of the Afenifere socio-political group, adding that his service to Ogun State and Nigeria remains commendable.
“I wish him many more years in good health and continued meaningful contributions to our country,” Tinubu added, praying that his legacy would continue to endure.
Daniel, who served two terms as Ogun State governor from 2003 to 2011, was succeeded by Ibikunle Amosun. He later secured a return to national politics as senator representing Ogun East in 2023.
