A day-old baby boy has been discovered abandoned in a polythene bag on Alhaji Masha Road, located in the Surulere area of Lagos State.
According to reports, a yet-to-be-identified social worker attached to a hospital in Surulere stumbled upon the distressing scene while on her way to a destination. She heard the sound of a crying baby emanating from the polythene bag and quickly investigated.
Upon opening the bag, the social worker found the newborn baby boy and wasted no time in rushing him to the Randle General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
Fortunately, the baby was found to be responsive to treatment and is currently under medical care.
Authorities, including the Divisional Police Officer and a team from the family support unit, visited the scene of the incident to gather information.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the case was reported at the Surulere Division on April 15, 2024, around 1:40 PM by the social worker.
Hundeyin assured that the investigation is ongoing and the baby is being cared for.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this incident echoes a similar occurrence in December 2023 when a day-old baby was discovered abandoned in a carton in Zone ‘B’ Area of Dagbolu, Osun State.
In response, the state government called on residents to provide any information that could help identify the baby’s parents.
