Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has issued a directive, with a deadline, Friday, May 26, ordering all political appointees in the state to disclose their assets as they conclude their terms in office.
Sanwo-Olu, in a circular, signed by the state’s Head of Service, Muri Okunola, emphasized that the asset declaration is in accordance with paragraph 11 (1b), part one of the fifth schedule of the Nigerian constitution, which pertains to the declaration of assets at the end of tenure.
According to him, the affected individuals include Commissioners, Special Advisers (cabinet and non-cabinet), as well as all assistants (Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, Personal Assistants, Technical Assistants, Personal aides, etc.).
However, the circular clarified that political appointees with appointments based on legislation or tenure, as well as members of statutory commissions and Governing Councils whose terms have not yet ended, are exempted from this directive, unless they receive formal notification stating otherwise.
It stated, “however, political appointees whose appointments are by legislation/tenure-based and members of statutory commissions/Governing Councils that their tenure have not lapsed, are not affected by the directive, unless otherwise formally informed.”
He therefore instructed the affected officials to prepare individual handover notes and return any government property, including utility/project vehicles, to the accounting officer or the most senior director of their respective ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
Sanwo-Olu, in the same vein expressed his gratitude to the appointees and extended his well wishes for their future endeavors.
Following his victory in the gubernatorial election on March 18, Governor Sanwo-Olu will be inaugurated for his second term in office on Monday.
