Alarmed by a surge in criminal activities, including kidnappings and killings, residents of the Issele-Uku community in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State have turned to spiritual intervention, laying curses on those behind the wave of terror sweeping the once-tranquil town.
The decision followed an emergency meeting held at the inner chamber of the palace, presided over by the traditional ruler of Issele-Uku Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Obi Nduka. In attendance were the spiritual head of the community (Eze-Dibie), titled elders, and palace chiefs.
Addressing residents at the palace frontage (Ishu Uge), Obi Nduka lamented the deteriorating security situation that has instilled fear in the hearts of many.
He said the community had no choice but to invoke the ancient Ine Ubi cleansing ceremony, a traditional ritual rarely resorted to, involving the pronouncement of spiritual curses on evildoers.
“The Ine Ubi ceremony has become necessary and is almost our last resort to cleanse the land spiritually,” Obi Nduka declared.
“Issele-Uku has always been a hospitable and peaceful community. We have never experienced such rampant criminal activity where residents are abducted regularly.
“Traditionally, we do not resort to spiritual cleansing involving curses, but the situation has escalated to a point where decisive action is needed to sanitise our community.”
The monarch noted that while the community was engaging with government and security agencies to address the insecurity, spiritual action became inevitable in light of persistent attacks.
“Government has not failed us entirely, as insecurity is a nationwide issue. However, I urge authorities to intensify their efforts because ensuring the security and welfare of citizens is the government’s primary constitutional duty.
“As custodians of our traditions and culture, we have pronounced curses on those orchestrating and aiding these evils.
We refuse to stand by while criminals operate with impunity. Anyone involved should be prepared to face the consequences of their actions,” he warned.
In a symbolic show of unity and resistance, residents from the nine villages that make up Issele-Uku embarked on a solemn procession to the palace.
Armed with palm sticks, Bibles, and chaplets, they invoked ancestral spirits to curse kidnappers, armed robbers, and those planting charms to perpetrate evil.
