In a significant development, the Delta State High Court in Effurun has granted bail to 69 individuals who were arrested during a gay wedding in the Ekpan community, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects’ counsel, Ochuko Ohimor, made the announcement in the Warri area of Delta State.

Each of the 69 individuals has been granted bail with a sum of N500,000 and must provide two sureties residing within the Effurun court’s jurisdiction.

As part of the bail conditions, the suspects are required to sign an undertaking at the State High Court of Justice in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area, where they had previously been arraigned on September 4.

Initially, the police prosecutor, Vincent Orarumen, opposed the bail condition, arguing that the alleged crime was not a capital offense.

The suspects were arrested by police operatives attached to the Ekpan Division on August 27 during a gay wedding ceremony they referred to as an “all-white party.”

Delta State Commissioner of Police, Wale Abass, had vowed to prosecute them in accordance with Nigeria’s Anti-Gay Law, which prohibits same-sex marriage in the country.

However, it’s important to note that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a competent court
