A human rights activist in the Niger Delta region, Israel Joe, has alleged that the human rights community in Delta State has been compromised.
He said this in a chat with Our Correspondent in Warri.
He said, “The human rights community in Delta State is experiencing the highest form of compromise,” he said.
“We now have too many hungry activists who only advocate for their stomachs and not the rights of the people.
“For instance, cases of rapes and defilements are being covered by acclaimed activists in the state.”
While noting that cases of Police extortion are being tackled by the command, Joe said, “We still have one or two extortions from Operation Delta Hawks on the ground of suspended CMR and others. While some activists cover them up and even go as far as telling victims to pay, which we shall bring before the authorities.
“The public is aware of the recent EndHardshipProtest, where activists openly campaigned against it and went as far as joining community youths to beat up peaceful protesters.
“What we now have is a shadow of rightfulness as we are now a few advocating for the right things to be done.”
