A tragic domestic dispute has left the Amukpe community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State reeling in shock after a 23-year-old man, identified as Success, was arrested for allegedly killing his father over a financial disagreement.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Thursday, stating that the suspect reportedly attacked his father with a cutlass during an argument at their family residence.
The altercation began after Success demanded N5,000 from his father, who refused to meet the request.
Eyewitnesses described the suspect as a known drug addict with a history of unpredictable behavior.
A neighbour, who spoke anonymously, said, “Everyone in this area knows Success as a drug addict who always misbehaves whenever he has taken those drugs.”
The confrontation escalated violently, resulting in the suspect attacking his father. The victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his wounds.
Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, Bright Edafe, confirmed that Success is in custody and investigations are ongoing.
“The suspect has already been taken into custody,” Edafe stated.
The incident has sparked widespread conversations in the Amukpe community about the dangers of drug abuse and the need for mental health interventions.
Residents expressed their disbelief and sorrow over the tragedy, with many calling for more robust measures to address substance abuse and its associated societal consequences.
