Dhul Hijjah Crescent Sighted, Eid-el-Kabir Holds June 6

The crescent of Dhul Hijjah has been sighted in Saudi Arabia, signalling the commencement of the 1446AH pilgrimage rites on Tuesday, June 4, and the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir on Thursday, June 6.

According to a report by Arab News, the announcement was made by the Kingdom’s Supreme Court on Tuesday, confirming that the day of Arafah, which marks the climax of the Hajj, will fall on Wednesday, June 5.

In line with the Islamic calendar, Muslims around the world will mark Eid-el-Kabir—also known as the Festival of Sacrifice—a day after Arafah.

The Supreme Court had earlier called on Muslims across the Kingdom to watch out for the Dhul Hijjah crescent on Dhu al-Qa’dah 29 and to report any sightings to the nearest court.

In a related development, Saudi authorities have declared a weeklong holiday for both public and private sector workers in celebration of the festival.

Eid-el-Kabir, one of the two major Islamic festivals, commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

The occasion is typically marked with prayers, feasting, and the slaughtering of sacrificial animals by Muslims worldwide.
