A group of disengaged police officers from Courses 33, 34, and 35 of the Police Academy has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, urging him to intervene in their reinstatement following a National Industrial Court judgment in their favour.
The officers, who claim they were prematurely retired despite their years of service, alleged non-compliance with the court order by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The court had directed their reinstatement and the regularization of their dates of appointment, but the directive remains unimplemented months after documentation.
In a letter to President Tinubu, written through their lawyer, Olatoye Adejola, the officers recounted their ordeal and expressed dismay over the lack of action by police authorities.
The letter, dated December 2024, highlighted the officers’ hope when they were instructed to report to Abuja in August 2024 for documentation.
However, the process, which was expected to lead to their reabsorption and salary restoration, has not yielded any progress.
The letter read in part: “Our clients were very elated and optimistic when they received signals to report at Abuja between 12th and 16th August 2024 for further documentation.
However, over two months after the documentation had been concluded, no official statement or information has been received from the IGP.
Our clients are confused and at the same time in total dismay, as they are in darkness about what exactly is causing the delay.”
The petitioners further called on President Tinubu to direct the IGP to expedite action on their reinstatement in compliance with the court ruling.
They noted that there has been no appeal against the judgment and urged the police leadership to act promptly to alleviate their long-standing suffering.
This development raises concerns about the enforcement of judicial decisions in Nigeria and the plight of officers who claim to have been unfairly retired.
Observers believe the President’s intervention could serve as a litmus test for his administration’s commitment to justice and the rule of law.
Efforts to reach the Nigeria Police Force for comments on the matter were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
