A devastating fire has broken out in an orphanage home situated in Wole Madariola Street, leaving the story building completely razed.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday.

LASEMA revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge originating from an air conditioning unit within the building.

According to the statement, the agency’s permanent secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that they received a distress call regarding the fire on Sunday at approximately 2:43 p.m.

He stated that their prompt action allowed for the successful evacuation of all seven boys residing in the orphanage, aged between one and seven years.

Following the statement, the boys were swiftly relocated to the nearby compound opposite the affected building, ensuring their safety.

However, a subsequent assessment conducted after the disaster revealed that the first floor of the building was partially salvaged, while the fire was contained within the store room.

It also unveiled that the rest of the ground floor was preserved from significant damage.

The LASEMA boss stated, “no injury, no casualties were recorded in the near fatality- incident, the operation was successfully concluded in record time”.

LASEMA, thereby, announced that the children have been formally handed over to the Child Protection Unit of Lagos State, who subsequently transferred custody to the Red Cross.
