A Federal High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced Dr. Geraldine Orok Ita, a medical doctor, to seven years in prison for her involvement in a N127,686,594 fraud case.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Ita was convicted for committing multiple offenses, including forgery and diversion of funds.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), through its Uyo Directorate, prosecuted Ita on a 12-count charge relating to the fraudulent activities.
One of the charges states that Ita forged a document—Form CAC 10 (Annual Return for a Small Company)—on November 6, 2014, concerning Sharpnet Concept Limited.
She was accused of using the document, purportedly signed by Mrs. Rose Orok Ita, a director at the company, to mislead authorities and commit the offense.
Ita denied all charges, pleading “not guilty,” which led to the commencement of her trial in 2019.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented substantial evidence and witnesses, with EFCC counsel Joshua Abolarin arguing that Ita’s actions had severely harmed the affected companies.
In her ruling on February 7, 2025, Justice Rosemary Oghogho-rie of the Federal High Court convicted Ita, noting that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. Ita was subsequently sentenced to seven years in prison.
The case began when the EFCC received a petition in 2019 from directors of Sharpnet Concept Limited and ROK Project Limited, alleging that Ita had fraudulently altered the companies’ documents to her benefit.
According to the petition, Ita removed the two original directors and falsely claimed to be the second wife of the late Engr. Orok Okonkon Ita, who passed away in 2004.
Further investigation revealed that Ita had also altered the companies’ registered addresses, appointed a new company secretary, and reallocated shares—all actions taken without the consent of the legitimate directors.
As a result of her actions, she was found guilty of misappropriating company assets, leading to her sentencing to the Nigerian Correctional Centre.
