Prof. Helen Bodunde, a renowned authority in Communication and Teaching English as a Second Language, has spotlighted the critical issue of pedagogical methods in the instruction of both indigenous and English languages.
During the 91st Inaugural Lecture at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Bodunde emphasized the pivotal role of language in education and its profound impact on student learning.
In her lecture, titled “Eliminating the Avoidable Gulf Between Knowledge and Development,” Prof. Bodunde argued that overcoming the pedagogical challenges present in language teaching is essential for enhancing student comprehension and educational outcomes.
She highlighted the necessity of addressing these foundational issues to bridge the gap in understanding that can hinder learners’ educational benefits.
As the Chairperson of the Publications Committee at FUNAAB and a member of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), Prof. Bodunde’s insights are informed by her extensive experience and expertise.
She underscored the importance of transitional bilingual education, advocating for its prioritization to equip Nigerians with the linguistic skills needed to thrive both domestically and internationally.
Prof. Bodunde called for substantial investments in teacher development, stressing the need for intensive training and retraining programs.

She proposed integrating this component into orientation programs for new students to enhance their comprehension abilities.
Additionally, she advocated for the establishment of language laboratories in all educational institutions to support both students and staff in their language learning endeavors.
Prof. Bodunde also suggested the creation of language clinics, which would offer preventive and corrective language support.
These clinics would play a crucial role in stimulating critical thinking across various subject areas by ensuring the use of appropriate language.
