Ahead of the much-anticipated Boiling Point Arena discourse scheduled for Sunday, September 8, 2024, Petroleum Economist and former President of the United States Association for Energy Economics, Prof. Wùnmi Iledare has called for President Bola Tinubu to step down from his role as Minister of Petroleum.
This comes amid a nationwide crisis triggered by a recent surge in petrol prices.
Professor Iledare, expressed grave concerns about the management of Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
With over 40 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Iledare argues that Tinubu’s dual role as President and Petroleum Minister is untenable and detrimental to the sector’s effectiveness and transparency.
In his critique, Iledare stated, “Successive Nigerian governments have consistently mismanaged our natural resources.
“President Tinubu should relinquish his role in the Petroleum Ministry to ensure proper oversight and transparency.
“The current situation is akin to having the President also serve as Finance Minister—it’s impractical and counterproductive.”
He further criticized the federal government’s involvement with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), urging a return to adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act’s principles and an end to extrabudgetary expenditures.
The Boiling Point Arena, a monthly current affairs programme known for its high-profile discussions, will feature Iledare alongside Dr. Oluwatoyin Jokosenumi, a former Director at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The discourse, titled “Nigeria in Socio-Political and Economic Quagmire: What Are The Rescue Options?”, will be broadcast live on Sweet 107.1FM and via Zoom, starting at 8pm.
The session, a special Independence Edition and the 23rd in the series, will be chaired by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, in his role as Chairman of the Boiling Point Council of Royals and Elders.
Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, the convener of Boiling Point Arena and a veteran media professional, continues to spearhead these crucial discussions aimed at addressing Nigeria’s pressing governance and economic challenges.
